We have a newer tract home, and the landscaping provided by the builder left us with an unusable sloping back yard and a lot of decorative but harmful trees. After the third tree trimmer told us we needed to remove all the trees, we decided it was time to redo the entire back yard. This was not a simple landscaping job, it was a major hardscape job.

A friend of ours recommended CDL, which was one of our 3 estimates and actually not our first pick. When our selected local vendor was unable to start the job for reasons beyond their control, we called Chris. He met with us the next day, and we hired him for our major backyard renovation. After discovering that we needed to obtain a Minor Exception with the city, Chris took over and worked with the city to get us through a very complicated process.

We reviewed Chris's project estimates, added items and removed items, until we got the project total to meet our budget. Throughout the 3-month project, we changed our minds about everything from the patio surface to the color of the fence stain more times than we can count. Chris did give us price quotes for major changes, such as the paver upgrade and adding irrigation to the side yards.

For some smaller changes, we knew that the price of the extra materials and the extra labor would add up, and some of these were not itemized. With the number of times we changed our minds, Chris could have easily done an extra 50+ change orders, but at some point, it makes sense to keep a simple list with cost estimates, and keep the project going.

We allowed for a 10% contingency, and that's what we used to cover all our changes. We also removed a couple of line items, such as planting trees, because it's not only too hot to plant right now but it allowed us more control over the project costs. (We had seen the previous negative reviews for CDL, but feel that the owner still retains ultimate budget control and must be responsible for the completeness of the contract line items and project changes.) The project is now complete, and we have a beautiful and unique back yard and patio.

We leveled out the sloping back yard with 60' of retaining wall, giving us 800+ square feet of usable patio surface with a built-in BBQ counter. The walls, peek-a-boo fence and arbor provide just the right amount of privacy/open view, creating an inviting outdoor room for entertaining. Chris delivered on all of our top priorities, and his work crew was amazing.

They showed up, on time, every day and worked harder than we could have imagined. We are so impressed and delighted with Chris, his crew, and our finished project. If you understand that large jobs are full of good and bad surprises, and you allow for a reasonable contingency budget, then CDL is our top recommendation. We could not have done our project without Chris. Thank you for our beautiful back yard!

He is not a man of his word and I did lose the Small claims monetary case but the Contractors State Lic Board sited him for trying to do a job with out a "B" lic. he was leading me on to get the money from me even though he was not allowed to build what I had asked him to! If you dont want to get ripped of stay away from him. I bet the bad reviews will hurt his business more than the amount of money he stole from me! He is not to smart! he would not have been able to even get a permit for anything he was going to build for me. I am glad we parted ways early on.
