A: Hydrangeas require differing pruning times; therefore, it is critical to know which type you have before you prune. In addition to using the techniques explained below, always remove any winter-damaged branches in early spring. The smooth hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens) flowers on new wood and should be pruned down hard to 1 foot in early March.

I bought some bales of pine needles and bags of soil last week. The cashier told me to pull up at the shed and the man would load it in the trunk for me. When I got home the pine needles were all over the trunk and one of the bags of soil he threw in had a hole so I also had wet dirt all over the trunk. I still needed more pine needles so I went to another nursery. Those were $5 a bale less than the $17 Gateway charged me. This loader put down a plastic barrier in my trunk before loading. Thank you! Goodbye Gateway.

Last May we bought some bushes and over the winter several died. There is a 1 year warranty included on the receipt which was due to expire within the week. I emailed Gateway Gardens and Rich responded to my letter. Through several emails and exchange of information I was given store credit. Today I went to Gateway and met Rich. Though very busy he did assist me with the exchange and gave some advice on new selection. He was polite and professional. I highly recommend this garden center to anyone looking for products and/ or assistance.

Great selection of native plants. Items that I could not find at other places. Everything laid out intelligently so plants were easy to find. Lots of informative labelling. Everything well maintained. Staff super helpful and knowledgeable. My new "go to" source for my garden.

This is THE best Garden Center around! I've shopped around and Gateway's quality and variety of plants far surpasses the competitors. When planning my home orchard, I made sure to get the trees from Gateway; which had a very diverse selection. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable and are will to talk about all things plants.

Always very helpful staff and a beautiful selection. I had a great experience today where someone helped me pick out bushes and trees for around my deck.

What a pleasant surprise. There is an abundance of unusual trees, paints and planters. You are bound to find something for the garden that you can't find else where this season. I am definitely coming back.

Great selection. They have a great native plant selection as well as water plants. Also great selection of already established garden plants like tomatoes, peppers and such. I came from out of state and would definitely go back.

I love this garden center and drive 30 miles to shop there passing several other garden centers. Choices are unique and all the staff are wonderful and helpful.

Very friendly and knowledgeable staff, a huge variety of thriving plants, native species galore. Just a really well run business. Was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to buy 200 lbs of compost; they loaded into our car and everything. Will definitely be our go to garden center from now on.

Terrible customer service. The employees walking around complaining. One check out.

The best inventory of "native plants" friendly to the environment. High quality have been buying trees, bushes, annuals, perennials, etc. for many years. Staff extremely knowledgeable and helpful. It is the only garden center we patronize because we get value and plants that thrive. With Doris' assistance we have been able to establish a butterfly and hummingbird friendly garden that has blooming beauty from March to November.

Wowser, simply amazing customer service by Matt in the greenhouse! The best customer service anywhere in the last decade. Super nice, super duper knowledgeable. Very thorough, very helpful. Matt asked a lot of detailed questions about our raised beds, the soil, our summer plantings; oh my! From there he told us exactly how to remediate the soil to insure success.

So many great winter vegetables to close from for our early spring vegetable garden. It think they had 12 lettuce varieties and he could describe each one to a T. We can't wait to go back.

Absolutely everything. Natives, trees, perennials, annuals, knowledgeable and helpful staff, environmentally friendly products. On a personal note, I found a popcorn corn there. Raised it, harvested three ears, cured it, and popped it. So fun and delicious. Thank you so much!

As a previous reviewer wrote, this use to be a quality source for landscape plants (I miss Walker's in Hockessin, they were the best). But in recent years it has definitely declined. 3 examples: 1) My wife went there about a year ago to buy some plants. They appeared diseased, and she asked about their appearance. The sales person assured her that they would clear up and thrive once they were established in a permanent home.

She didn't buy them, and when she got home she googled the plants. Whatever disease they had was described as fatal to the plant, and the only cure is to tear them out and get rid of them. So the person lied to her. Good thing she didn't buy the plants, since they now have a no-return policy. 2) Check out their prices on Christmas trees.

They are about twice as high as anyone else around, for the same quality and size. I don't know why anyone would buy a Christmas tree here. 3) The owner (?) Pam? Pat? was rude to me the last time I was there. I have no tolerance for that.

This is the place to buy your plants. They have a very extensive selection and are available with helpful advice and plant knowledge for what might be best for your landscape. I have shopped here for years and have been very satisfied and I have beautiful plants and trees that were purchased here. They also carry fountains and great flower pots, garden tools, etc. Every year they have a jack o lantern display that brings out the community. Great local business!

Gateway used to be one of the top garden centers in the tri-state area. Over the last few years there has been a decline in choice and quality of materials. Often now what is available is not in the best condition. The staff is generally helpful and pleasant, which may convince you all is fine; however, the staff may fake knowledge about plants rather than have it, and management seems to have implemented what is effectively a no-refunds policy.

If you buy a specimen that is diseased or terminally rootbound - especially something expensive and rare - you won't get your funds back when it dies. Explanations for why you're getting stiffed may be spacious. Don't even think about finding out which growers provided dodgy materials. Having been a gardener, plant enthusiast, and on the professional side of the landscape business many years back, I find it annoying and sad when a business with many loyal customers negatively changes their policies.

Friendly, helpful staff really go out of their way for you at Gateway. They have an excellent supply of plants, trees, and tropical plants in season. For me, Gateway's pond department has been an invaluable resource. Peg and Darlene are wonderful at diagnosing and fixing any pond problems you might (or in my case will) have.

I'm not usually out this way, but if you live in this area, give it a go. The plant material looks fantastic, big selection (much larger than it looks from the road) with lots of hard to find varieties (such as Lewisia and a large native plant area). The staff is friendly and very helpful. Prices are a little high, but you get what you pay for and it's an independent. No restrooms, but perhaps the nicest portable one you've even seen.
