Nies Landscape Contractors is a family-owned and run enterprise which has been in business since 1980. We are a design/installation contractor whose work includes planting, retaining walls, decks and patios of brick and stone. Until 1989 we had done an occasional water feature but all had the usual problems associated with water features of the time: green water, leaks caused by settling stone work, obvious plumbing, liners that lasted only five to ten years, and lots of maintenance. For items that were expected to bring enjoyment, they were more of a headache.
Services
Here is a sample of the water features that Nies Landscape Contractors has completed in the last several years. Our first water feature utilizing the Aquascape System. This installation was completed in 1996 and was a large improvement over its previous version. This Feature takes advantage of a steep backyard hill to form a tall falls connected to the pond by a stream. The water feature adds to the enjoyment of both the deck and the patio. This project incorporates a waterfall, two pools, and a small stone bridge.
This water feature was first completed in 1989 and had all the problems associated with water features being built at that time. The water was almost constantly green; the berm which had been created for the waterfall settled and shifted causing leaks; debris and fish clogged the pump, which was located in the bottom of the pond; plumbing was hard to hide; sides tended to move inward under the pressure of the doping stone; and the exposed liner would float as water got underneath it.In all, the feature proved to be more maintenance than fun.
The site was a hill with an 8' elevation change. At the top of the hill is the driveway and at the bottom is a brick patio, with an elevated wood deck between the two. We used the hill to create a cascading waterfall with a 16' stream. The falls and stream leading to the pond present a wonderful view from the deck.
This was a terrific site for a water feature. Not only was it able to be enjoyed from the patio, it could be heard and viewed from the kitchen, dining room, and master bedroom. The hill had a six foot elevation change, which allowed us to construct a long, serpentine stream with multiple 3-4 step-downs as well as stretches of gravel.
