Services
A native of the Bay Area, Paul Tamate has been designing garden landscapes here since 1987. He began learning the art of Japanese landscaping at the age of 10, helping his father on landscaping projects before starting his own company 25 years ago. His interest in Asian landscaping design-and water features in particular-has been shaped by numerous trips to Japan and extensive study of Asian landscape architecture and design.
We find our inspiration in the serenity of Asian and Japanese garden designs - the subtle interplay between shade and light, stone and plants, dense plantings and open space. Our solutions meet the needs of clients who are seeking tranquility in their San Francisco yards, a refuge from the hectic pace of their daily lives.
Here you'll find evidence of the range and scope of our landscaping work in San Francisco. You'll find projects that include deck building, irrigation systems, retaining walls, along with our custom landscaping and gardens. We'll be updating and adding portfolio items often so bookmark our site for future reference.
For San Francisco residents, retaining wall design and installation offers an attractive solution to the challenge of unstable and/or sloped terrains. Custom retaining walls can be made from a variety of materials, such as: wood, stone, brick or concrete.

Paul has done a series of improvements in my backyard, transforming the place into a truly beautiful oasis. He built a new concrete box with stone for bamboo. He replaced the old brick walls of my backyard with beautiful stone. Finally, he designed and built a new pergola in the center of my backyard. All these improvements have transformed my backyard into a beautiful place. Paul is very professional, and reliable.

He is very punctual, and completes the work very fast and on-time. His prices are very reasonable, and he always provides advice and great ideas. I strongly recommend Paul, and his team! I am looking forward to work with Paul in future house projects. He is one of the best contractors I have worked with since I own my house. Ben Bernal Heights, SF

I could not be happier with the work Paul and his team did on my backyard. Paul was patient and understanding in helping me develop the overall layout for my patio construction and landscaping. On top of that he was extremely mindful of keeping the project within my budgetary constraints. I was also really impressed with his knowledge of all the different types of plant life that work well in San Francisco. Now I can not wait to host a some parties and BBQ's in my new oasis of a backyard. Thanks again Paul!

Paul Tamate did a great job transforming our backyard of old concrete squares, overgrown plants, a multitude of potted plants and a "Big" palm tree into a beautiful calming space. We wanted an Asian/Western theme. He created a solid patio area of flagstone for barbequing and entertaining. The Asian features were created with a Yukimi lantern, Japanese maple, heavenly bamboo and a pond with stream.

The pond was designed to give us the feel of the country/rustic and peacefulness created by the sound of running water. He worked patiently with us through a few of our changes from the original design. It was amazing to us that he finished the job in two weeks. He and his crew were very efficient and worked hard to keep us on budget. We are glad we chose Paul Tamate Landscaping and recommend him highly

Paul was great, I explained what I needed and he was very understanding about possible difficulties with our neighbor. Paul stayed consistent with the estimate on price and timing, he and his crew did a beautiful job on our retaining wall and fence. This was a big project and we had many contractors that couldn't figure out how to get the work done within our budget.

Tamate Landscaping revitalized our front and side yard over a 3 to 4 week period. We went from the tired burned out grass look to a modern and manicured landscape. Paul personally spent quite a bit of time working with us on the design and was on site supervising and working on every detail of our project. He and his team were efficient and finished the project within the promised timeframe and cost. We were extremely happy with the end result and would definitely recommend Paul and his team to others.

Paul did an amazing job on our backyard. I have done a few big construction projects and there are only a few people whom I would work with again. Paul is one of them for many reasons, a few of which I'll go into detail here. 1) Honest - He will give you an honest opinion about the best solution that will fit your budget and needs. He won't try to upsell you simply to make more money.

I let him turn our pile of dirt into a beautiful backyard while we were on vacation out of the country. He sent me pictures as he progressed, and when I got back everything was finished and cleaned up. There was no need to supervise him in order to make sure the job got done right. 2) Creative and knowledgeable designer - I was inspired by his beautiful portfolio on his website, and I'm glad I contacted him.

I did not hire a landscape architect but Paul was able to transform my wishes into a beautiful back yard - on time, on budget, and with a low-maintenance, practical solution. He knows his plants very well and was able to choose plants that are continuing to thrive in my sun-less backyard. He was flexible when there were a couple of his plant choices I didn't like and gave me several other options.

He is also an expert on water features - We were committed to putting a waterfall in our backyard, and this is one of Paul's specialties. (Again, check out his website!) 3) On time and on budget- what more is there to say. I have worked with many subcontractors and this very rarely happens. 4) Nice to work with - While he likes to get the job done well and on time, he is a pleasure to work with. He will go out of his way to fit your needs. I interviewed a half dozen landscapers/gardeners, and I am glad we went with Paul.
