Animal Damage - What Can You Do
Report
Deer most often damage plants by browsing new leaf tissue, buds, and small twigs. This is where a substantial portion of stored energy in the form of sugars and starches is located. Male deer also damage trees and shrubs by territorially rubbing their antlers on bark tissue, sometimes girdling and killing the plant.
Butterfly & Hummingbird Gardening
Report
Butterflies like masses of color on plants in warm, sunny, wind protected locations. They also like a shallow water source and large, flat areas on which to rest and warm themselves. Attracting butterflies to your garden is easy when you have the right combination of plants. Create a grouping with any of the following plants for your successful butterfly garden.
Deadheading Your Perennials
Report
Dead-heading is the process of removing individual flowers or flower clusters after the blooms are spent, faded, or drooping. Removing them before they begin to seed will encourage the plant to produce more flowers. If you wish your perennials to re-seed, discontinue dead-heading and allow seeds to ripen in fall. Continue dead-heading annuals up until frost.
